Painted in the depth of winter, a few weeks before departing for Ojai. How can I answer when asked what's my favorite color? If I had one it would be an orange-pink glow of the sky, which I'd never achieved before coming home from Morocco and mixing together male murex, African lipstick, and some of my favorite pinks and reds.  I spent days painting the 'heart' of this picture.

Reef. Watercolor, lapis lazuli, murex, African lipstick. 104" w x 68" h
Reef was with me all winter in the studio. I built it in layers, and there was definitely a moment when I thought I'd overdone it, however I now love the intensity and the brightness of this piece!  It needs a certain spot to be hung. It is a diptych, with two 52" x 68" pieces that fit together in a number of ways.

This is the piece I painted on residency in Wyoming with the strange inspiration of 'the feeling that no one is there'.  Its amazing to approach the painting process with 100% focus. Working in a vast landscape seems to do the trick for me. I can't wait to see it in a wide open space.
