David Weinberg came to Danielle with a dream and a lease. After 35
years spent working as an executive with Fel-Pro, his family business,
Weinberg had decided to open an art gallery to show his own photographs.
'I'm not 25,' Weinberg offered in an initial meeting with Danielle.
He knew he'd have to work differently than a young buck just out of
school to get his work on the market and wasn't content to get in line
with the other artists.
Danielle worked with Weinberg to craft a profile of the artist to send
out in an initial press push. She also advised Weinberg and his team
in weekly meetings to prepare for the opening of a new gallery in River
North, working through topics such as: establishing a tone for the gallery,
hiring and training staff, opening events, developing an exhibition
program, and creating interpretive materials, advertisements, invitations,
and a website. The David Weinberg Collection opened in October 2006
with two series of Weinberg's work: 'Reflections on a City' and 'Age
of Grace', and a full-page story in the Chicago Sun-Times, a promotion
on Daily Candy, and two consecutive pieces in Chicago Social Magazine.
Weeks into the gallery's initial show, Weinberg, who is active in education
reform, took to heart Danielle's suggestion to broaden the gallery's
focus and present artwork in a richer way. His second exhibition, 'Portrait
of West Africa' presents his own photographs alongside images from the
archives of The Field Museum and information about West Africa.
